Hidalgo Medical Services takes a holistic approach to health care for New Mexicans in the southwest part or the state. Since Hidalgo opened in 1995 in a trailer behind a hospital. the organization has managed to become a national model for the elimination of health disparities in communities. Hidalgo turns away no patient. and ability to pay for services is determined on sliding scale basis. Hidalgo targets four core services: medical, dental, behavioral health and family support services. Information about how to obtain services is disseminated through community health workers known as "promotoras" who target marginalized and vulnerable communities and enroll them in services such as Medicaid, medication assistance and enrollment in other federal and state benefits.
