Hidalgo Medical Services provides comprehensive primary health care services to the people of Grant and Hidalgo Counties in New Mexico. Primary care is defined as the first point of entry into the health care system for preventive and basic, non-emergency, diagnostic and treatment services. These services include admitting and following hospitalized patients in Silver City. We also provide prenatal care and delivery services.

HMS employs board-eligible and certified family practice physicians, certified physicians assistants and family nurse practitioners to serve our patients. Plans include adding pediatric care in the near future.

Laboratory Services

Laboratory services are a regulated by Medicare in our industry through the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). At our more rural locations HMS offers CLIA waived lab services. These are a very limited and defined set or lab services that can be done in-house. For almost everything else, HMS provides moderate complexity lab services at its clinic in Silver City. This means that the majority of lab services you need can be provided within HMS. We feel that this can speed up the results process and provide better patient care.

Lab specimens are sent daily via Grant County’s Corre Caminos public transportation system which is funded, in part, by HMS.

Some insurance companies require that certain labs be sent to certain laboratories in Albuquerque or elsewhere. HMS will make those arrangements as well.

HMS also partners with Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City for many, more complicated lab processes.

X-ray Services

We provide basic x-ray services at our locations in Silver City and Lordsburg. All other radiologic or other procedures such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are typically referred to GRMC. Patient choice is always a consideration.

Pharmacy

There are three ways that HMS can assist patients with pharmacy services beyond the simple prescription.

Medication Assistance Program

Many Pharmaceutical companies offer free medications typically to chronically ill patients who qualify financially. The HMS family support program assists all people who qualify with this services, whether they are HMS patients or not. The family support medication assistance program (MAP) is also supported by the a number of community volunteers. Call your local Family Support office to find out more.

340b Prescriptions

Because of its unique relationship with the federal government, HMS can afford its patients access to a limited number of prescriptions through the 340b program and the Silver Rexall Pharmacy in Silver City. The program allows HMS to purchase medications at federal drug prices. This allows the patient to pay either $6 or $16 per prescription for very expensive medications. The patient MUST be a patient of HMS, referred only by HMS providers and be eligible to the HMS sliding scale program..

Because HMS is not an insurance company, the 340b and sliding-fee programs are limited by our limited access to resources. Please consult with your HMS provider should you think you might benefit by one of our pharmacy assistance programs.

Emergency Coverage

In Hidalgo County, HMS collaborates with the Hidalgo County Ambulance Service for after hours coverage. The clinic in Lordsburg will see minor emergencies, e.g. sutures (stitches and breaks) however, people should dial 911 in all cases where an emergency medical condition is suspected. For our patients in Hidalgo County who travel to Silver City and GRMC for a medical emergency, the HMS physician or call team physician on-call ,will provide admission services.

For our Grant County patients, HMS utilizes local ambulance services for emergencies. Again, please dial 911 for anything that might be an emergency.

HMS physicians share after hours call with other local physicians in a call team. Should you be required to go the hospital ER in Silver City, a call team member will attend you.
